Review: Come to Me Quietly (Closer to You #1) by A.L. Jackson

17306969Synopsis

Aleena Moore is content with her life. She has goals and dreams and an easy smile. She also has a secret she holds locked inside.

Jared Holt believes he doesn’t deserve to love or be loved. He destroys everything he touches. Haunted by the mistake that shattered his life, he’s fled from the memory of that pain.

Jared doesn’t know why he’s compelled to return, but finds himself drawn back to the place where it all began. The exact place where it ended. When he runs into his childhood best friend, Aleena’s older brother Christopher, he agrees to share Christopher and Aleena’s apartment while he looks for a place of his own.

Aleena is no longer the little girl Jared remembers from his past and evokes feelings in him he never wanted to feel again. Terrified of destroying her, he fights to keep her away. But her touch is something he can’t resist—the touch that sealed his fate.

Their pasts are intertwined and their futures uncertain. The only truths they know are the secrets they whisper in the night.

***** 5 Star Review by Sarah

For those of you that have read an A.L. Jackson book before you know what to expect. You know to set aside an entire day dedicated to doing nothing but reading the book because you’re not going to be able to set it down. You know to have tissues and chocolate on hand because you’re inevitably going to cry… hard! You know to warn your friends and family you’re starting a new A.L. Jackson book so when you finish and start screaming about how great it was and how much your heart hurts and how many hours you spent crying they aren’t surprised.

You just know you’re going to get a great book that makes you feel so much when you pick up an A.L. Jackson book…. Come to Me Quietly absolutely does not disappoint.

I am so torn about how to write this review – on one hand I want to tell you all about Jared and Aly and their story, but on the other hand I want you to experience it yourself because it is such a special journey.

So, here’s what I’ll do. I’m going to tell you what happened to me while I read Come to Me Quietly.

I fell in love with Aly, she’ a doll. I loved her from the start. Then, I hurt for her. I didn’t really know why I was hurting I just knew something happened and I wanted to make it better for her. I wanted to be her friend so she could tell me all about it.

That girl was unforgettable. Fucking perfect. Too bright to fully see.

Then, Jared comes along. Jared stole my breath. I loved him instantly. The whole time I kept thinking to myself It’s okay Jared, you’re worth it. She loves you. I love you. I didn’t even know his big secret yet, or really anything about him but I knew deep down he needed to know how much I loved him.

Would she stop me? Or would she allow me to feed off her compassion and goodness? Would she let me wreck her? Destroy her? Because that was the only thing I knew how to do.

I spent the entire book with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. As much as I wanted to stop, I wanted to put it down and walk away because I didn’t want to know what had broken this strong, beautiful man, I couldn’t. I kept going and I kept crying and I kept reassuring Jared that he was loved.

You need to pick this book up, you don’t want to miss it… I promise! Warning: Do not pick it up though, unless you’re ready to do the ugly cry. Seriously.

I am absolutely dying to read Come to Me Softly, I need more Jared and Aly and I am so excited to see the rest of their journey.

Blog Tour: Review and Giveaway- A Perfect Mistake (A Perfect Secret #2) by Zoe Dawson

A Perfect Mistake cover

Title: A Perfect Mistake (A Perfect Secret Series, #2)

Author: Zoe Dawson

Release date: December 22, 2013

Publisher: Blue Moon Creative, LLC

Age Group: New Adult

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Mystery

Synopsis

How can they have a future when their past is based on a lie?

The perfect preacher’s daughter, Verity Fairchild, has something that only she and God know about and she wants to keep it that way. Her mistake was easy to keep secret when she was out of town, but now that she’s come back to Hope Parish for the summer, she comes face-to-face with the guy responsible for it all. Boone Outlaw nearly ruined everything for her and despite the fact that he’s now working at her father’s church, she’s determined to stay as far away from him as possible.

Boone Outlaw doesn’t understand Verity’s anger towards him. He barely knows her. In high school she was Holy Mary Verity and she was off limits – except in his dreams where Verity seems way too real. Most of the time he was wasted in high school, not the type of boy Verity would ever look at twice, but he can’t shake the feeling that something might have happened between them. He’s going to break his own rules to get the answers he needs straight from Verity.

What will Verity do when she finds something in Boone that she never knew existed and her perfect mistake is the only thing that could stand between them and their happiness? Will she sacrifice Boone to keep her secret?

**** 4 Star Review by Sarah

Book two is Verity Fairchild and Boone Outlaw’s story. Verity is the preacher’s daughter with a little bit of rebel in her. She is also strong and smart and has a huge heart, especially when she gets wrapped up in Boone. Oh, Boone, when he smiles they call it Boone Swoon because yes he is just that swoon worthy. I mean he calls her darlin’ and I’m pretty sure my panties melted every damn time!

I totally fell for Boone and I fell hard. I absolutely loved their story. The two of them faced so many obstacles but their love prevailed. They shared secrets, too- this is the Perfect Secret series after all, but theirs were a little more believable/relatable.

Do not miss your chance to meet Boone.

I have to say I am not so patiently waiting for book three which features the last third of the unholy trinity… Braxton Outlaw. He is all brooding, too much too handle, sex on a stick and I can’t wait!

A Perfect Mess CoverBook One: A Perfect Mess (A Perfect Secret #1)- Synopsis
I know what you did last summer.Aubree Walker, the perfect girl most likely to succeed, is sure there’s only one person who knows what she did.

Booker Outlaw, one of the three Outlaw brothers—all identical, all gorgeous, all from the wrong side of the tracks, and all pure bad boys. He was always the unpredictable one, the one who would be brash enough to make it big self-publishing horror novels on the internet. He promised never to tell, but everyone knows you can never trust an Outlaw.

Then a year later, in the middle of the night, she receives a phone call at Tulane. Her aunt, who took her in after her mother’s death, is in a coma under suspicious circumstances. Now she has to face that one person who knows all about what she did that summer—sexy Booker.

Returning to Hope Parish to be with her aunt, stirs up all those ugly memories. When Aubree starts getting threats, she can’t help but wonder if what she did last summer was tied to her aunt’s “accident.” Afraid, she turns to the only person who knows the truth and Booker doesn’t hesitate to offer his broad shoulder for her to lean on. But Booker has a secret of his own that could crush their fledgling relationship.

As the hot, sultry summer days move on, she finds that even a perfectly smart girl can lose her heart to a perfectly bad boy. What is she going to do when someone starts asking questions Aubree doesn’t want to answer? She’s knee deep into a terribly dangerous, wholly life changing, who-can-she-really-depend-on perfect mess.

*** 3 Star Review by Sarah

This is Booker Outlaw and Aubree Walker’s story. Booker is one third of the unholy trinity, he is funny and witty; he is also always coming to Aubree’s rescue, which makes him loveable. Aubree Walker is Little Miss Perfect- perfect grades, perfect clothes, and perfect attitude… until one day her life is turned upside down and she has to hide a secret that is huge. Of course, who is there to help her but Booker himself?

I loved their story; Booker made me laugh out loud several times and I loved watching Aubree come into her own and stop worrying so much about being perfect.

My only complaint is that it took way too long for the secret to come out, I mean I had a pretty good idea what the secret was about 25% in and it doesn’t really get revealed until the very end of the book.

Incinerate Jacket

Excerpt

Following after her, I find her bent over in front of the refrigerator holding the door open and staring at the contents inside. The way her ass is sticking out unleashes something inside me, and I go semi-hard just from watching her. I instantly feel the need to show her that I’m not some weak, damaged man. I walk up behind her and grab her by the waist, turning her around. Kicking the door shut behind me, I push her to the island, and if I thought I could get away with it, I’d be pressing myself up against so she could feel what she’s doing to me. She’s staring up at me with confusion in her big, brown eyes, and I wonder what the hell I’m doing.

“Hop up,” I tell her, and she complies immediately, surprising me by not fighting it.

I place my hands on her knees, spreading them and stepping closer to her so my hips are between her legs. As best as I can, I take a hold each one and wrap them around my waist, and she involuntarily tightens them around my middle, although her ass is still firmly planted on the counter. This isn’t how I imagined her legs wrapped around me for the first time, but I can’t deny that I don’t love the feel of her gripping my waist tightly.

“Arms around my neck, Charlie.” The confused expression on her face deepens, but she does as she’s told.

“What are you doing, Knox?” she asks, looking up at me, her face only inches from mine.

Swallowing hard, I ignore her question and bring my forehead to hers. “Just do this for me, okay? Don’t fight me on it. Just this once. I need to do this.”

She nods, and I’m not sure she knows what to expect, confirming it when I pull her off the counter. Gasping, she starts to struggle, and I have to brace myself against the counter to keep from falling. Jesus, this woman is so damn defiant, and it can be both sexy as hell and annoyingly irritating.

“Knox, what the hell?! Put me down!”

Fuck, I know I should probably listen to her, but I’ve gotten to this point and I’m not stopping until I can prove to myself that I haven’t completely lost all of my strength. She’s not exactly heavy, but her struggling is making it difficult to keep my one good arm around her as I make my way down the hallway, heading into the guest bedroom. Somewhere along the way she stops struggling, apparently having given up and figuring that it’s just easier to let me do this.

I’m slightly out of breath by the time I get to her bed, and I’m more than happy to release her from my arms. Relief washes over me when she plops on the bed, bouncing once. Whether the relief is from having been able to do it or from having freed myself of her weight. Either way, I’m fucking ecstatic, and even though I’m breathing heavy, it was a small victory for me and my bruised ego.

I begin backing away from her because I know the verbal assault is coming, and I don’t blame her, but I don’t regret it.

About Tessa

I’m a twenty six year old book junkie who is also obsessed with sports. Bengals, Buckeyes, Reds are my teams! I work for the government during the day, hang out with Air National Guard on the weekends, and am married to a guy 15 inches taller than me. We’re quite the pair! We currently live right outside of Dayton, OH with our two cats.

I’ve been reading since I was a kid. My mom was a librarian, so it was a given. Heck, she even made sure we watched Wishbone instead of the Smurfs. In 2011 when I graduated from college, my mom bought me a Nook, and then in the summer of 2012 I found this amazing site called Goodreads. I was introduced to so many amazing indie/self-published authors. After reading almost 400 books that year, my husband gave me the push to finally sit down and write my own. It was a rocky start, but over time the words started flowing and I couldn’t get Jace and Lexi out of my head.

If I’m not writing or looking through tons of photos of hot men, all in the name of research, then you can probably find me curled up with my Kindle, ignoring the rest of the world. I love my sports almost as much as I love my books. My other obsessions include red wine, hot men, country music, and all things Grace Potter.

He is everything I crave, all I desperately want—and he is everything I can’t have.

Evan Black embodies my every fantasy. He is brilliant, fierce, and devastatingly handsome. But he is also headstrong, dangerous, and burdened with secrets.

My family warned me to stay away, that I could never handle Evan’s dark dealings or scarred past. Maybe I should have listened. Maybe I should have run. But our desire is undeniable, and some temptations you just can’t fight.

And from the moment we touch—the passion between us consuming us both—I know that I will never be the same.

Wanted is an erotic romance intended for mature audiences.

*****5 Scorching-Drooling-Wish Evan Was Real-Need A Fan Star Review by Betsy
There is a new Alpha Male in town who will knock your socks off! Ladies, get ready to meet Evan Black. He most definitely will not disappoint you!

“Evan Black was the slow burn of sin and seduction- and tonight he was in rare form.”

Evan is a young success story. Along with his friends Cole August and Tyler Sharp, Evan Black has taken Chicago by storm. A successful businessman with dark secrets, Angelina has been lusting after Evan since she went to stay with her uncle Jahn at the age of 16. Battling her own past, Angie (when she’s being the good girl) is determined to make the safe, responsible choices, even though she is sometimes desperate to let out her inner wild child, Lina.

Following the death of Jahn, Angie finds herself in contact and in conflict with Evan, the tension between them building quickly despite Evan’s determination to keep himself at a distance from the girl he believes is too good for him. Angie, on the other hand is determined to have Evan, knowing that he can be the one to finally let Lina be free.

“My heart was pounding so hard I was certain that everyone could see the movement of my dress in time with my pulse. I wanted to beg for him to touch me again, to kiss me again, but at the same time I didn’t want him to stop looking at me, because under Evan’s gaze I felt more alive and real and solid than I had in years.”

Making arrangements to give in to temptation for one weekend only, Lina and Evan finally allow themselves to show each other how they really feel. And it is HOT!!! Not only is Evan sweet and caring, he is also dark, dangerous, and domineering. A perfect combination to keep the ladies wanting mor!

“I want you frustrated, baby. No touching, Your c*nt belongs to me. Your orgasm belongs to me. I want every ripple of pleasure that courses through your body to come from me. Do you understand?”

Needless to say, I will be on pins and needles waiting for just a glimpse of more Evan Black. Fanning myself in the process.

Rome by Jay Crownover

20131112-193913.jpg

Synopsis
Sometimes the wrong choice can be just right . . .

Fun and fearless, Cora Lewis knows how to keep her tattooed “bad boy” friends at the Marked in line. But beneath all that flash and sass is a broken heart. Cora won’t let herself get burned again. She’s waiting to fall in love with the perfect man—a baggage-free, drama-free guy ready for commitment. Then she meets Rome Archer.

Rome Archer is as far from perfect as a man can be. He’s stubborn, rigid, and bossy. And he’s returned from his final tour of duty more than a little broken. Rome’s used to filling many roles: big brother, doting son, supersoldier—but none of those fit anymore. Now he’s just a man trying to figure out what to do with the rest of his life while keeping the dark demons of war and loss at bay. He would have been glad to suffer through it alone, until Cora comes sweeping into his life and becomes a blinding flash of color in a sea of gray. Perfect may not be in the cards, but perfectly imperfect could just last forever . . .

*****5 Star Review by Betsy
If you aren’t already familiar with Author Jay Crownover’s Marked Men books, you have been missing out! Jet held a soft spot in my heart, but I was a Rule girl through and through. I’m pretty sure after reading this though, I might be moving on to bigger and better things with older brother Rome.

Rome is a war veteran finding it difficult to adjust to life outside of the military. His antics have gotten him in to extensive trouble, and have left his family and friends struggling to find a way to connect with the person they no longer feel like they know.

Cora is a girl waiting for the perfect man (aren’t we all?). After getting burned by a total tool before, she is bound and determined not to fall for a man who is flaws, and is holding out for Mr. Right instead of falling for Mr. Right Now. All of that changes when Rome comes in to the shop to make amends with his brother Rule. Although they have met before, something has changed for Cora, and she starts questioning wether or not to throw it all away for a broken man like Rome.

“I don’t know half pint, something tells me reigning you in might be a pretty good time.”

One of my favorite things about the Marked series, and definitely about Rome is how flawed and real the characters are. We all struggle with finding our way past our mistakes and choices, and that is what makes it so easy to invest in damaged characters like Cora and Rome. Jay Crownover does an amazing job of weaving her story, leaving you shocked, devastated, angry, and loved just like her characters. This book turned me inside out on more than one occasion, and I can’t help but beg for glimpses in to Rome and Cora’s story when we finally get our hands on Nash in April!

Shaw’s relationship advice to Rome (something everyone needs to hear!):

“Relationships are not tailor-made and people are flawed. You have to work around that and love the other person anyway. Our flaws are what make us unique, and while Rule might not be perfect, he is absolutely perfect for me.”

About The Author
I’m supposed to share interesting details about myself so that my readers get to know me so here we go in no particular order: I’m an natural redhead even though I haven’t seen my real hair color in years, I’m a big fan of tattoos and have a half sleeve on either arm and various other pieces all over the place, I’ve been in the bar industry since I was in college and it has always offered interesting insight into how men and women interact with each other, I have 3 dogs that are all crazy, I live in Colorado and love the snow, I love music and in all reality wish I could be a rock star not a writer or a bartender but I have zero talent so there is that.
I love to write, love to read and all I’m interested in is a good story with interesting characters that make the reader feel something.

*** 3.5 Star Review by Sarah

I am so torn about this book and this review. I’ve decided the best way to do it is to make a pro-con list because there were things I loved about this story and things I hated…

Pros:
• Trevor: He is super hot, adorable, controlling, confused, sweet, charming…everything we want in a male lead
• Liz: At first she comes off as this timid, shy, easily controlled girl but later we find that she is just broken and needs a little help. She also has a little fire to her, she does and says things that made me laugh out loud.
• Their Love: They have the sweetest kind of love, it’s unconditional. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this relationship grow and evolve. They have the potential to be one of the sweetest couples of 2013

Cons:
• The Sex: Ugh, I wanted more! The sex scenes were way too short for my liking and most of the time they felt rushed and forced… I couldn’t get into them enough for them to have an impact on me or the story.
• The drama: There were several scenes that I felt were there only for the “wow-factor” but they didn’t really need to be there, therefore they fell a little short.
• The epilogue: Loved the premise of it, loved the glimpse of their future but it was too long and drawn out.

Overall I enjoyed this book, though I wish it had a little something more! I think this author has great potential and look forward to her honing in our skills in the future.

Excerpt

My eyes narrow. “If you ever even think about spanking me, I’m going to beat the crap out of you, Trevor.”

His eyebrow rises. “You think you can take me?”

“No.” I shrug. “But I will give it my best shot.”

His smile is so devastating that it takes my breath.

“When you’re giving it your best shot, are our clothes on or off?”

EXCLUSIVE BONUS SCENE: Vendetta by Autumn Karr and Sienna Lane

Anyone else out there curious about all of those wordless meetings between Devon and Leighton?? Check out this bonus scene where we get a taste of their… extracurricular activities leading up to Vendetta. FYI… IT’S HOT!!

20140107-080031.jpg

I look at my reflection, taking in my tight black dress. I adjust is slightly, pulling it down as it hitches up my leg. I’m torn between leaving before anything can happen again, but deep down I know I will stay.
I want this.
I don’t know if it makes me a bad person, but I want him.
I crave him.
He’s an obsession and no matter how much I get, I always want more. I may not be able to get everything I want from him, not even close, but he gives me his body, and that I’ll willingly take.
I exit the club bathroom, and head for the bar. My friend Julia already left to meet up with her boyfriend, something I had counted on for tonight. Julia is flaky, and never sticks with me for the whole night, never cares if or how I make it home. She’s the perfect person to take out on nights like these. I order a bottle of water, sliding the money across the table. No alcohol for me tonight, because I want to remember everything about this encounter, I don’t want anything to be blurry.
When I see him enter the club, the whole world around me stills. It’s just him I see. He’s dressed to impress, in a black shirt and pants. His face is expressionless, his movements controlled. He looks my way, only for an instant, but it’s enough of a signal for me.
I head the opposite way, leaving through the back door, and walk to my car that is parked one street down, in an alleyway behind a large building. I slide into the back seat, my heart racing. Pulling out my phone, I scroll through my messages to pass the time. About ten minutes later I finally see him walk towards the car.
He opens the door and wordlessly gets into the back seat with me, never taking his eyes off me the entire time. He gives me an almost sneer, his lips curving resentfully. I don’t know who he resents, him or me, or maybe both of us, but he’s probably right in feeling so. Without a word he reaches over and pulls me to him, placing me on his lap so I’m straddling him. He runs his hands along the back of my thighs, lifting my dress with the motion, barring my lace panties. He licks his lip before kissing me roughly, while his hands slide inside my panties.
Finding me wet and ready, he hums his approval, sliding his finger inside me. He gathers the wetness on his finger, and then moves to my clit, circling and applying just the right amount of pressure. I pull my lips away from his and undo his belt. I undo the button of his jeans and pull the zipper down, eager to take him in my hands. I pull down his boxer shorts, and pull out his cock, stroking and loving the feel of him. He’s hard as steel, and moans his pleasure, letting me know he likes what I’m doing.
Before I can comprehend what’s happening, he moves my hands away and rips my panties open. Grabbing a condom from his pocket, he opens the packet with his teeth and slides it on. I take his hardness into my hand and slide him inside me, both of us moaning at the same time. I lift my hips and ride him furiously, until we both finish together.
He kisses me once more, then grips me by the hips, pulling me off him, and sits me down next to him. He gets rid of the condom and does up his pants, giving me a quick glance before opening the car door and getting out. He stares at me through the car window as I right my clothing, as if waiting for me to compose myself. He stands there until I slide into the front seat, start the engine and drive off. I look at him in my rear view mirror, noticing he only walks away when I’m down the street. I exhale deeply, and head home.
Next week.
I’ll see him again next week.

Synopsis
Luke Price’s life has always been about order, control, and acting tough on the outside. For Luke, meaningless relationships are a distraction-a way to tune out the twisted memories of his childhood. He desperately wishes he could forget his past, but it haunts him no matter what he does.

Violet Hayes has had a rough life. When she was young, she was left with no family and the memory of her parents’ unsolved murders. She grew up in foster homes, living with irresponsible parents, drugs, and neglect, and trying to fight the painful memories of the night her parents were taken from her. But it’s hard to forget when she never got closure-and she can’t stop dreaming about what happened that tragic night. To make it through life, she keeps her distance from everyone and never allows herself to feel anything.

Then Violet meets Luke. The two clash instantly, yet they can’t seem to stay away from each other. Although they fight it, they both start to open up and feel things they’ve never felt before. They discover just how similar they are. But they also discover something else: The past always catches up with you .

4.5 Star Review by Betsy
We met Violet and Luke in the un-put-downable Callie and Kayden books, but now they get their very own story! Yay! Violet is Callie’s broody and mysterious roommate, and Luke is Kayden’s equally broody childhood friend. Their paths cross one night when Violet jumps out of a window to escape a bad situation and lands on unsuspecting (and drunk) Luke. Although neither is looking for anything substantial, and both have preconceived ideas of the other, they strike up an uneasy and strange friendship.

When school ends for the summer and both find themselves without a place to go, they make the decision to live together. As trust is built, and both of their secrets are slowly revealed, revelations arise that threaten to tear them apart. True to her amazing writing style, Author Jessica Sorensen brings the angsty goodness in Violet and Luke.. The background we get on these characters sheds light on their strange and mysterious behaviors in Callie and Kayden. Be prepared, the ending will leave you hanging for sure! I’m sure we will not be the only ones waiting on pins and needles for the conclusion of Violet and Luke.

Luke
She reaches for my fries with an undecided look on her face. “So I have a question.”
“Okay…”
“About you.”
I slowly chew my food. “I’m not really sure I want to hear your question now.”
She picks a pickle off of her burger, pulling a repulsed face. “Well, I’m still going to ask it.”
I grab a handful of fries from the tray that’s on the table between us. “Go ahead and ask but it doesn’t mean I’ll answer.”
She props her elbows onto the table with her burger in her hand. “Why haven’t you ever talked to me before? I mean, we’ve walked past each other probably a hundred times, but never so much as acknowledged each other and then suddenly you’re stalking me.”
I pick up my soda and sip from the straw. “First off, I’m not stalking you. I just can’t seem to get rid of you.”
“You didn’t have to stop to pick me up.”
“Yeah, I did.”
“Why? You don’t know me—you’re in no way obligated to help me.”
“I know, but I wanted to.”
“Why?”
I shrug, setting my drink down. “Why not?”
She gives me a funny look, like I’m the most confusing person in the world, when really she should be looking at herself like that. “I don’t get it. Why would someone like you help someone like me?”
I open up the bun of my chicken sandwich to pick the tomato off. “What do you mean someone like me and someone like you?”
She points at me. “You as in a football player who has friends.” Then she points at herself. “And me as in the loner girl who could probably kick your ass.”
I choke on a laugh and my mouth full of food almost shoots out of my nose. “You could not kick my ass,” I cough, and then take a swallow of my drink.
She scans me over while scooping up some fries. “I beg to differ. I think you’re not as tough as you try to look.”
“Do you really?” If only she knew what really lay inside me. “Because most people think I am and for a good reason.”
“I think it’s all for show,” she replies nonchalantly and I can’t tell if she’s being serious or not. “I think that deep down you’re just a softy.”
“Are you trying to pick a fight with me right now?” I set my sandwich down on the tray and crack my knuckles. “Because I’m not going to fight a girl.”
“That’s such a typical guy answer.” She hurries and takes a drink, but I detect a hint of a smile before her lips wrap around the straw.
“You know what I think?” I cross my arms on the table and lean in, cocking my head to the side as I observe her closely. “I think you like arguing with me and that’s why you’re bringing this up.”
Her shoulders lift and descend as she takes a bite of her hamburger. “Maybe, but maybe I’m being serious.”
“You know that as a football player I have to tackle guys, right? It takes strength to do that.”
“Maybe you just run, though,” she counters. “Maybe you’re just good at running.”
The way she says it reminds me so much of my past and it’s like a kick to the stomach. “Maybe I’m not, though. Maybe I suck at running.” I sound choked and I decide it’s time to cut this conversation short, my brain seeking that potent taste of Jack and Tequila mixed with nicotine. I glance at my watch, pretending to check the time. “I just remembered that I have to meet Kayden somewhere in like a half an hour, so I’m going to have to take you back.”
She balls up the wrapper for her hamburger, acting nonchalant, but her shoulders are stiff. “Sounds good to me. I was done anyway.” She seems irritated and I have no idea why, other than she seems to be able to read through my bullshit and test me, which most people can’t and won’t even try. I’m supposed to be a closed book. A mystery. That way no one can see who I really am. It’s the way I’ve been living for years and it’s comfortable. Not ideal, but nothing is ideal.
We don’t talk as I collect our garbage and then walk next to her as she limps out to my truck. I try to offer her my arm and open the door for her, but she denies my offer, moving to the opposite door and pushing it open.
During the car ride, she barely says two words to me. I should be happy about it. That way there’s no room for sudden questions and statements that will set me off, however I find myself missing the bantering thing we had going and the way she pushed my buttons. By the time I drop her off, all I want to do is ask her to stay, talk some more, let me get to know her. But I don’t understand why. I’ve never wanted to get to know anyone before. I’ve never even been out on a date. Each woman I’ve been with, I’ve only been with once. Just sex. That’s all it’s ever about. And I’ve never wanted anything more.
Until now.
